Lanzarote, the Natural Biosphere Reserve
An Environmentally-Conscious Island
Living up to its prestigious title of being an International Biosphere Reserve, Lanzarote is proving yet again that green is the new black. Already boasting the world’s cleanest environment and the highly protected national park of Timanfaya, the government is taking further action.
Big Changes
It is no doubt that one of the busiest places in Lanzarote is its main tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen, where the Avenida de las Playas (the main strip) generates a fair amount of traffic. Certainly more than you would expect to find on this environmentally-conscious island, anyway. But this is all set to change with drastic improvements underway.
A Greener Future
The Tias council has enforced a €2million project to renovate the whole of Puerto del Carmen’s front, with many environmental issues taken into account. The first of which is that the Avenida will be made into a one-way road, refusing as much traffic to pass through. This reduction of road space means there will be more room for pedestrian areas, along with a separate bike lane. The public lighting and benches will also be renovated, making a stroll down the front or a bike ride in the sunshine even more attractive.
The Green Craze Spreads to Matagorda
These road works begin in Fariones, at the start of the Avenida, and will eventually extend right down to Los Pocillos, near Matagorda. But the change does not stop there. Here in Matagorda, we already have our recently renovated beach side promenade, which attracts thousands of visitors on a monthly basis, who like to indulge in a tranquil stroll and breathe in the fresh sea air. Now, in the newly refurbished, upmarket luxury complex of Matagorda Bay, there are already environmentally friendly aspects taken into account. One of which are the heated swimming pools which are powered by solar energy, as opposed to other complexes here in Lanzarote. The majority of apartments have built-in sky lights to allow more natural sunlight through, instead of resorting to the flick of a switch when more light is needed. These environmentally-conscious modifications stretch through to the bathrooms too, where all apartments have walk-in showers, as opposed to the old-fashioned bathtub where more water is wasted.
